Norse Bylgja
The Bylgja (pronounced bill-gee-ya) is named after the Old Norse word for wave. Very appropriate as this model has a moderate rocker and hard chines, making it an ideal boat for the rough waters encountered around the UK's varied coastline.
At 17ft foot and weighing only 24kg (fibreglass layup) this is a sea kayak designed for covering distance, and also be loaded up to carry overnight kit when multi-day expeditioning. The recommended maximum carry capacity is 140kg, and a paddler weight range of 60-110kg which gives scope for the Bylgja to be loaded up to the hilt with equipment, water and provisions for extended island hopping excursions.
For those just wanting to use the Bylgja for day paddling, the rough water aficionado's will appreciate the hard, Aramid reinforced chines running the length of the boat. Perfect for carving tight turns on tide-race eddylines and playing in surf. This model is also nicely balanced front to rear to give a precise ride and predictable handling.
Lighter paddlers should look at the Norse Kayaks Idun for a same shaped boat, but scaled down to suit smaller and junior sea kayakers.
