Although plastic canoes and kayak float, and most closed cockpit kayaks are supplied with additional built-in foam buoyancy, it is widely recommended that extra buoyancy is added. Adding additional floatation to a canoe or kayak is especially important on open and moving water. The more buoyancy that is added, the higher the boat will float in the water when flooded, the more water will be displaced and the easier and quicker the boat can be rescued and emptied out.
